there's an oil for that too

tonight Grayson is going to get a few drops of lavender oil on his piggies (feet) and then I will rub my hands over his crib sheets for extra lavender goodness! he is a bit cranky this evening and the lavender always helps mellow his mood before bed.   oh and I applied a dab to his chin too. He bopped himself in the face with a toy at daycare after he was bit, twice, by other teething babies. we applied lavender to those too. he truly loves helping me gather and apply the oils! I know he knows they make him feel good! we will be diffusing Gentle Baby tonight.

…and yes, he is sitting on the counter. yes, I know he could fall off but don’t worry if he did, I have an oil for that too. “Nigh Nigh … muah!” — Grayson & Monkey

Essential oils are the aromatic liquids found within shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, resins, and seeds. Some people like to call essential oils “nature’s living energy” because they contain unique constituents that provide a host of benefits. Most essential oils are extracted from plant sources using steam distillation and are highly concentrated, making them far more potent than dried botanicals. Essential oils are volatile, which means that the scent of the oil rises quickly into the air. They are also versatile, with a wide variety of uses. Some people use essential oils to enliven an environment, support different body systems, or just for their great scents. However you choose to use essential oils, chances are someone else has tried that same use in the past. If you still don’t know where to start, rest assured that each essential oil is labeled with primary usage instructions. An essential oil reference guide will also guide you in the right direction.WHAT IS AN EO
Essential oils are nothing new! They have been used throughout history in many cultures for their health-supporting benefits. The Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Europeans, and Chinese have used them for centuries for health, beauty, fragrance, and spiritual practices. There are also many references to essential oils in historical texts, which signifies their importance in history.HISTORY

There are three ways to use essential oils. You can use some oils aromatically, some topically, and some can even be taken internally.HOW
One of my favorite ways to use essential oils is aromatically. Many of us have had a time where a smell triggers a memory—freshly baked bread, pine needles, or spring flowers can easily take you back to positive times in your life. Essential oils are the same! To use them aromatically:

  • Place 1-2 drops in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, cup your hands over your nose and mouth, and inhale deeply.
  • Diffusion is another great way to use essential oils aromatically. By creating a fine aromatic mist, diffusers allow you to create a spa-like atmosphere and enjoy the benefits of essential oils in any environment. Young Living offers a wide variety of diffusers, and when you enroll as a Wholesale Member, you will receive a diffuser in your Premium Starter Kit.AROM

Essential oils can also be applied to the skin. This is known as topical application. Topical application is a great way to support your skin because essential oils are easy to use and provide quick benefits. Essential oils can be applied to the area of the body you want to support (never in the eyes or ears). They can also be applied to the bottom of the feet, the wrists, behind the ears, and on the back of the neck.TOPICALLY
Some people choose to use essential oils internally by adding them to water or liquid, placing them in a capsule, or taking one of Young Living’s oil-infused products. Peppermint, for example, can help promote healthy bowel function and support overall digestion when taken internally.TOPICALLY
Of all the companies out there, why would you choose Young Living above all the others? Well, Young Living is the world leader in essential oils! Young Living’s commitment to quality starts with seeds. The seeds we use are selected for their ability to become botanicals with high levels of bioactive compounds. Next, we distill using a gentle, proprietary technique for steam extracting essential oils and preserving their precious constituents. To guarantee consistent, verifiable quality, our oils are tested in Young Living’s own internal labs, as well as in third-party facilities. Finally, each essential oil is carefully bottled and labeled using state-of-the-art equipment.SEED TO SEAL
To ensure that Young Living is able to control every step of the Seed to Seal process, we own a number of farms and partner or co-op with many others around the world. Gary Young personally travels the globe to scout farms that offer ideal conditions for growing premium botanicals. This personal, direct involvement in the growing process is what allows us to ensure that each product delivers the purity and efficacy our members around the world expect.GLOBE

awesome facts you never knew about coffee

You don’t need coffee when you first wake up.

Your body naturally produces a hormone called cortisol that helps you feel alert and awake. That is released according to your circadian rhythm, dictated by the time of the day. So, if you have a habit of drinking coffee when you first wake up, you may want to wait a bit longer so that your caffeine isn’t wasted during a time when cortisol is at its highest.

Coffee isn’t actually that dehydrating.

Great news! Caffeine was once thought to be a significant diuretic, but that’s actually not true. Unless it’s consumed in large quantities (more than 500 to 600 mg a day, or two coffees) there aren’t such negative effects. In fact, studies have shown that urine output isn’t significantly changed when a person drinks a caffeinated beverage, rather than something non-caffeinated like water. So, as long as you enjoy your coffee in moderation, there’s not much to worry about.

Like most great discoveries, coffee’s magical powers were first realized through the majesty of crazy goats.

According to legend, Ethiopian shepherds first realized the profound caffeinating effects of coffee when they noticed their goats started “dancing” after eating coffee berries.

Coffee can help you live a longer and healthier life.

Coffee contains lots of antioxidants (it’s the biggest source of antioxidants in an average Western diet!) that help the body fight chemicals called “free radicals.” As a result, coffee drinkers are at a lower risk of diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease, Type II Diabetes, and Heart Disease. Here’s the thing, though: coffee drinkers are also more likely to have unhealthy habits such as smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol heavily, and eating red meat, so the study shown above has been adjusted to show what could happen if these other factors weren’t in effect.

Coffee contains important nutrients you need to survive.

A single cup of coffee contains 11% of the daily recommended amount of Riboflavin (vitamin B2), 6% of Pantothenic Acid (vitamin B5), 3% of Manganese and Potassium, and 2% of Niacin and Magnesium.

Drinking coffee can help you burn fat.

Studies have shown that drinking caffeine can increase your metabolism 3 to 11%. It’s one of the few chemicals that can actually help with fat burning, so might as well drink up!

All of the coffee grown on the planet is from an area called “The Coffee Belt.”

The Coffee Belt contains all of the regions that have the conditions needed for coffee growing. Since the plants clearly require lots of sunshine and warmth, it’s pretty easy to say that this belt makes a good outline for the best tropical vacations, too!

Iced coffee is more expensive because it uses more resources.

From plastic cups to napkins to double brewing (re-brewing coffee a second time to make it stronger), the resources needed for iced coffee are more numerous (and expensive!) than hot coffee is. All of that adds up, and it causes establishments to charge more for their iced drinks than their hot-beverage counterparts.

Caffeine is actually crystals.

The buzz you feel after drinking coffee is actually from ingesting tiny 0.0016-inch crystals of caffeine. So small, yet so energizing!

Coffee is a red berry before it’s a bean.

Those berries you see right there? Those are coffee berries. They grow on trees!

Caffeine starts working quickly.

It only takes ten minutes to start feeling the effects of caffeine after you take a sip of coffee, so drink up!

Coffee can help prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Several studies have shown that coffee drinkers are up to 65% less likely to get Alzheimer’s Disease, which is a leading cause of dementia.

Black Ivory coffee is the most expensive kind of coffee on Earth, and it’s made from poop.

The most expensive coffee in the world is made from elephant dung, and it’s called Black Ivory coffee. It costs $50 per cup. Luwak, aka civet, coffee is made by feeding coffee beans to mongoose and then using its feces. It costs $160 per pound.

Coffee is good for your liver.

People who drink four cups of coffee a day are 80% less likely to develop cirrhosis, a condition that develops from several diseases affecting the liver.

The first webcam in the world was made for coffee.

In 1991, a group of Cambridge University scientists set a camera on their work building’s coffee pot, streaming the footage live on the web so that they would be able to see if the pot was empty or not, saving themselves the disappointment of a coffee-less trip. The picture above is the actually from that first camera.

Coffee houses were banned in England because that’s where all the cool kids were drinking.

Okay, kind of. In 1675 King Charles II banned coffee shops because he thought that that’s where people were meeting to conspire against him.

Caffeine improves your performance when working out.

Caffeine increases your levels of adrenaline, and releases fatty acids from fat tissues, leading to a better physical performance by those who consume caffeine before working out.

So go ahead, grab a cup and enjoy. Share this with your coffee-lover friends!

Health Benefits of Tea + Thieves Tea Recipe

coffee or tea? the age old question … for me, BOTH!  I always start my day with coffee, always have and probably always will.  However, my love for tea has grown in the past two years.  Tea ChartIt has become a nightly thing for me.  I find that it helps relax me at the end of the day.  my nightly tea of choice has been Thieves Tea for quite a while.

Why does our family use oils? Less than a year ago, our family decided to start incorporating essential oils by Young Living into our everyday routine as a means of replacing some of our first aid items with products that chemical free.  I had heard from many friends that essential oils helped their babies sleep naturally so I wanted to get my hands on some of that!  I had also heard that they can help clear up skin problems and are great for boosting your immune system.  I figured there was no harm in trying oils out and decided at the very least, I might actually save money!

I really had no idea that what I was buying was way more comprehensive than just a few pretty bottles of magical sleep oil.  I started to do a little more research and found out that essential oils can help hundreds of things and we now use them for everything from teething, immune boosting, calming moods, killing bacteria through safe cleaning products, preventing colds, lessening cramps during that time of the month, congestion, seasonal discomforts, and to help with my anxiety.  So basically, everything.

What are essential oils?   essential oils are the life blood of a plant, made up of complex compounds that when cold pressed and distilled, can work in our bodies in hundreds of ways.  Because the molecules in essential oils are so so small, they have the capacity to heal at a cellular level, which a lot of medicines cannot even do!  In turn, they help restore balance to our bodies naturally.

What can Essential Oils help with?  so many things – the list is pretty much endless and also growing!  I have been able to get rid of all over the counter medicine (minus a few things, of course) and we are using essential oils to help heal and balance out our bodies.  It took me awhile to get here, but persistence helped me realize that these oils were actually working and doing a better job than medicine I had bought at the drugstore.  For example, instead of popping pain relief medicine, I will use peppermint oil on my temples, back of neck and on spot of irritation to get rid of head pressure.  No more expensive face creams that only break the bank … I use coconut oil + frankincense + lavender + melaleuca for a fraction of the cost and actual results!

What kind of oils do you use?  We only use oils made by Young Living because we love that they have their own farms and are in complete control over their products from start to finish.   This is so important to us because we feel that knowing the source is key in getting the best results from the oils.  Most oil companies have middlemen and buy plants from random farms to make their oils.  Young Living does not.  They hand pick organic seeds and see them through the distillation process, where they test and test for perfection before bottling up.  I thought, if we are going to use Essential Oils in place of most medicines, I wanted to make sure the oils were 100% pure and not treated with pesticides.  Also, each bottle of oil can be traced to its’ source, how cool is that!?

Where and how should I start?  I always direct people to where I started, and where most do when beginning their journey with Essential Oils.  Young Living has put together an amazing starter kit for beginners containing 11 everyday oils, a diffuser, and a lot of samples and information packets.  It is called the Premium Starter Kit and sells for $150 to wholesale members.  This kit is perfect for those new to using essential oils because it contains some of the most popular oils, such as thieves, lavender, peppermint, stress away, and lemon to name a few.  This kit has everything you need for a basic natural first aid kit and has hundreds upon hundreds of uses.  I am attaching a document to show you what is all in this kit.  I do not really care for the other kits, they are kind of lame.  You just pay a lot for samples, not bottles of oils…

YOUNG LIVINGYou can buy the Premium Starter Kit here:

If I sign up as a wholesale distributer what does that mean?  The main reason most individuals sign up as wholesale members is to get 24% off all of their purchases.  Wholesale members end up saving more money and also have the opportunity to be a part of Young Living’s rewards program called Essential Rewards if they so choose.  Wholesale members do not have to sell a darn thing if they do not want to.  In fact, most Young Living wholesale distributers do not! Being wholesale gives you the option of selling if you want but NEVER makes that a requirement.

What is Essential Rewards?  (ER) is Young Living’s monthly autoship program that lets you chose what product you want each month and gives you points based on what you order.  Then, you can turn those points into free products!  Who doesn’t love FREE?  The minimum you have to purchase is $50.  ER also lets you change your shipping day each month and gives you low flat-rate shipping costs. I love ER because it has allowed us to slowly build our medicine cabinet by spacing out what oils we want from month to month, while getting free products along the way.  It’s a win-win program really.  Another thing I love about ER is you can cancel at anytime with no-strings-attached.  Should you choose to stick with the ER program, you are allowed to skip one-month per year!

I’ve got my oils, now what? Education is everything!  I wholeheartedly believe this because without education, those pretty bottles just sit there and collect dust just like anything else.  I love helping those who sign up under me learn how to use their oils right off the bat by adding them to our private facebook page which is full of support, ideas, online and in-person classes an so much more.   Our team, Lavender & Grace, has a private Facebook page for wholesale distributers that is an encouraging space where you can ask hundreds of questions and get answers really fast from our amazing members!

Some good resources:

– If you have kids or are pregnant get the book called Gentle Babies it’s so so good

– Our team’s private FB page called Essential Families

– Essential Oils Reference Guide, by Life Science Publishing

I hope this information was beneficial to you!  If you ever have any specific questions, let me know, I love helping others learn all about them!
